Anthropic: No Mental Model Needed for Claude-Written Codebases

Anthropic's Claude Code team now has Claude writing roughly 90% of the codebase and claims reviewers no longer need a complete mental model of it. The team documented a single pull request that ran more than fifty review rounds overnight, with reviewers spending most effort on pre-existing code, and acknowledged a control they say they do not yet have. Practitioners outside Anthropic are now testing whether this approach works beyond Anthropic's own context.

Read this week if you let AI agents write a significant share of your production code

Highlights
  • Claude writes approximately 90% of Claude Code itself, according to Anthropic's engineering team.
  • A documented pull request ran more than fifty review rounds overnight.
  • Reviewers spent most of their effort on pre-existing code rather than new changes.
  • The team's monorepo grew from roughly 2,500 merged changes per day in May to more than 30,000 in September, prompting Anthropic to replace git with an in-house system.
  • The team acknowledges they lack a control they say they do not yet have.

Bottom line Read the Anthropic post if you're weighing how far to let AI write your own codebase, but treat the no-mental-model claim as a hypothesis, not a prescription.

Google Search falls below 50% of Alphabet revenue as AI monetization gap widens

Google Search dropped to 49.7% of Alphabet's revenue in Q3 2026, the first time below half since separate reporting began, as AI-powered search queries grow fast but generate less revenue per query than traditional search. The company missed Wall Street estimates on search for the second straight quarter while Google Cloud more than doubled to $30.7B, and Alphabet shares plunged 13% in their worst day ever, erasing roughly $500B in market cap.

Read this week if you depend on Google Search for customer acquisition or ad revenue

Highlights
  • Search was 49.7% of Alphabet's $128B Q3 2026 revenue, down from 62% in early 2019, while Google Cloud grew from 4.4% to 24.1% over the same period.
  • Search revenue grew 12% year over year to $63.4B, missing the 15% analysts expected, while Google Cloud revenue jumped 103% to $30.7B.
  • Management acknowledged that the fast-growing AI mode brings in less revenue than traditional search, and Google is expanding its AI mode ad program internationally.
  • Alphabet reported negative free cash flow of $9.07B for Q3, compared to the $2.7B analysts expected, with capital spending at $51.4B in the quarter alone.
  • Alphabet shares dropped 13% on Thursday, the worst day since going public in 2004, surpassing the previous record decline of 11.63% set in March 2020.

Bottom line If you rely on Google for acquisition or ads, monitor how AI mode monetization evolves as the revenue-per-query gap could reshape search economics.

Gemini 4 Carbon tops SEC-bench Pro at 88.2% for vulnerability finding

Google announced Gemini 4 Carbon on Wednesday, a frontier model it says leads SEC-bench Pro at 88.2% for finding vulnerabilities, ExploitGym at 54.8% for exploitation and CWE-bench at 71.0% for patching, with an Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index score of 59 against Claude Opus 5.5 at 58 and GPT-6 Astra at 57. Access starts with select cyber defenders. The model is twice as likely as Argon to generate secure code, and Google says it asks for human input when a task is ambiguous instead of forcing a path forward. It also resisted every evaluated attempt at indirect prompt injection. For teams that run scanners or review pipelines, the interesting number is the exploitation score: the same capability that patches a bug can demonstrate it is reachable.

OpenAI matches Anthropic: subscription credits apply to API organizations

OpenAI now gives $100, $200 and $500 subscription plans the same quantity of expiring credits toward one API organization, matching a benefit Anthropic announced earlier this month for its Max and Team tiers. Simon Willison, who holds subscriptions with both companies, notes the credits are already covered by what he pays, which changes what a side project costs to run. The practical effect is that prototyping against a frontier API no longer requires a separate budget line for anyone already on a top tier. Credits expire, so the clock on them starts when they land.

Y Combinator runs 25-agent GPT-6.1 Terra colony in Minecraft

Y Combinator's labs team, working with Olam Labs, ran swarms of Claude and GPT agents in Minecraft and Mindustry to watch how roles, hierarchies and coordination patterns emerge, and open-sourced the harness they had to build because none existed. A new colony with 25 GPT-6.1 Terra agents is running on Twitch. The stated motivation is alignment research: swarms can produce useful emergent capability, as in the thousand-agent runs that attacked open math problems, and dangerous behavior, as in the OpenAI-Hugging Face incident. For anyone building multi-agent systems, the harness is the reusable part — observation, memory, action, messaging and script execution for long-running agents.

Amazon scales back Nova models, reorganizes AI teams around robotics

Amazon is scaling back the ambitions of most of its Nova AI models and reorganizing its AI development teams, according to Bloomberg reporting covered by Futurism, after the models failed to gain traction. Text, video and image Nova models are in a "keep the lights on" state, with resources moving to a new project led by a robotics researcher. Nova never reached the name recognition of ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. For teams that built on Nova, the signal is that the model line is no longer where Amazon is investing.

Tiny world model generates and plays games on a Raspberry Pi Pico 2 W

A repository called tinyworldformer runs two small neural networks on a Raspberry Pi Pico 2 W: one predicts the next frame and reward from the current frame and action, generating the game, and the second picks actions to play it. The project is written in Rust with transformers, has 149 stars and 11 commits. What is notable is the split — generation and control as separate small models sharing a microcontroller, rather than one large model doing both. It is a working demonstration of how little compute a world model needs when the world is narrow.

Meta deploys LLM-generated JiTTests in production with human review

Meta has moved its Catching JiTTests approach from research prototype into production infrastructure, generating tests with LLMs to catch bugs before code lands across hundreds of millions of lines of code. The paper, "Just-in-Time Catching Test Generation at Meta," details the initial deployment, and the authors describe the approach as human-on-the-loop rather than fully automated. The problem it addresses is that traditional testing cannot keep pace with a codebase that size. The design choice worth noting is where the human sits: reviewing generated tests rather than writing them.

Linux Kernel TCP Flaw CVE-2026-98432 Exploited to Root MPTCP Servers

A use-after-free vulnerability in the Linux kernel's TCP handshake code has drawn conflicting severity assessments after Anthropic demonstrated a working remote root exploit against servers with Multipath TCP listeners. The kernel CVE team rates the flaw 9.8, while major vendors score it between 5.9 and 8.1, leaving Ubuntu and RHEL without fixes as of October 29. The gap reflects uncertainty about real-world exploitability beyond the specific MPTCP configuration Anthropic tested.

Highlights
  • CVE-2026-98432 is a race condition in the Linux kernel's IPv4 TCP connection setup that can cause the kernel to read freed memory, rated 9.8 CVSS by the kernel's own CVE team.
  • Anthropic said on October 27 that its AI model wrote an exploit that achieves remote root code execution on Linux servers with a Multipath TCP listener, requiring no credentials.
  • Ubuntu and Red Hat Enterprise Linux had not released a fixed kernel as of October 29.
  • Red Hat, Amazon, Oracle, and SUSE assign the flaw CVSS scores between 5.9 and 8.1, lower than the kernel team's 9.8 rating.
  • Caveat: The demonstrated exploit requires an MPTCP listener, which must be explicitly requested by an application; neither the CVE record nor the kernel fix mentions MPTCP.

Bottom line Patch Linux servers with MPTCP listeners immediately; others should prioritize based on your vendor's severity assessment and patch timeline.

PHP2Shell flaws exposed critical infrastructure's dependence on underfunded PHP Foundation

Palo Alto Networks confirmed active exploitation against internet-exposed PAN-OS management interfaces and is releasing fixed versions across affected branches.

Highlights
  • Palo Alto Networks confirmed active exploitation targeting internet-exposed PAN-OS management interfaces and is releasing fixed versions across affected branches, with Unit 42 independently verifying the attacker's tooling and results.
  • The exploited surface is the PAN-OS management web server, which also fronts the GlobalProtect portal, allowing attackers to leverage PHP2Shell for unauthenticated remote code execution.
  • CISA added CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on October 26, confirming active exploitation and ordering federal civilian agencies to patch within three days.
  • A suspected China-nexus threat actor observed on October 25 combined PHP2Shell with a Linux kernel privilege escalation vulnerability tracked as Fragnesia to root 25 servers across the U.S., Japan, Taiwan, and South Korea.
  • After rooting the firewalls, the attacker launched attacks against Active Directory with confirmed credential extraction and directory enumeration.
  • Patched versions PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, and 8.2.35 are available; Sansec reports the vulnerabilities are present in every unpatched PHP since version 5.4.

Bottom line With a major firewall vendor confirming active exploitation of its management interfaces and releasing emergency fixes, this is now a critical perimeter security incident; patch PAN-OS immediately, restrict management interface exposure, and audit Active Directory for indicators of compromise.

Architect’s corner

Generation and control as separate models

When a system has to both model an environment and act in it, splitting those jobs into two models lets each stay small enough to fit the hardware you actually have. The generator learns the dynamics — given a state and an action, what comes next — while the controller learns only which action to take, so neither has to represent the other's problem. The tiny world model on a Raspberry Pi Pico 2 W shows the split at its smallest: one network predicts the next frame and reward, the other picks the action, and both run on a microcontroller. The same separation appears at the other end of the scale, where a frontier model's exploitation and patching scores are measured as distinct capabilities rather than one number.
